I have a Zebra Danio that looks ready to explode. Her little head looks like a pinhead...and her scales are sticking up. Is this dropsy?? She started poofing up quite some time ago but just this weekend doubled her body size (at least double).

What is weird is that she is still swimming, eating and playing.

I feel she is going to have some misery ahead of her. Should I euthanize her?

I have 72 gallon community tank, perhaps slightly overstocked, water tests are perfect except PH which is always high (8.5).

Dropsy-afflicted trops will continue to eat and swim, bloat up, pine-cone and seem to be normal for a period of time...

Considering that I can't be sure the Dropsy is not contageous, it may be better to speed up the ultimate and destroy the fish.

I am never sure which method to use. Some suggest Vodka. Is that your method of euthanasia? I trust you w/my fish's life, so I am really depending on your answer here. For some reason I think we may have discussed this before and you mentioned Vodka.

The preferred way by most seems to be to place the fish in a plastic bag with some water and simply place it in the freezer.

After reading alot of gary's post, i am pretty sure he likes the putting them in the freezer method.

That is what I like most also.

Slicing it's head off with an extremely sharp knife is what I do.

Hobbyist's have various methods of euthanizing trops...

I'm not really sure that fish have pain sensors but I do support the freezing method to suppress any pain response they may experience.

RasboraMary,
I'd suggest reading thru this thread. I never have and never will be a fan of freezing a fish. There have been studies that fish do feel pain, and freezing IMO is one of the worst ways you can kill a fish. If you're looking for the best way to euthanize, sharp blow to the head, or in the case of larger fish, simply cutting the head with a sharp knife.
