well its about the size of his eye.. umm im not gonna touch it.. but we think it might be some sort of an ulcer.. i wish i could send you pics.. but i dont have a camera its bulging out the scales...but thats the only fish that has it... besides my other gourami in my 15 who has it in the same place as the other one. I bought them both at the same place... almost an open wound ucler type thing..

You know what, I had gourami's when I first set my tank up ages ago who developed that, and I'm sorry to say that despite bacterial meds and melafix (UK only mediactions though, no maracyn etc) they all died from whatever the heck it was. (Never did diagnose it) And you know something else, I spotted a gourami in an lfs tank recently with the same thing on it! It seems to start off with a white appearance and then turn raw..

Sorry for the info!

I have had the same experience as Malaikah. It appeared one day, no one knew what it was, and there was nothing I could do to make it go away. He died about three weeks after I first spotted it. Sorry about that.

Hmmm well alright... both of them are still eating and swimming.. the gourami with the more ounced ulcer, his colors are starting to fade a bit.. not quite the flame red he should be.. but i guess we will see where this goes...If anyone else has any input.. please do so! Especially if you may happen to know what it is!

I think my Gouramie died of the same cause. Would you please look at my post, titles "Please help my Gouramies!!" to verify if mine died of the sme thing?

The same thing happened to my partner, he had a Gouramie and his developed a bulging spot on the side of his body. We did not understand what it was or how the fish got it, but it did die after about three weeks or so.

How long has your fish been like this for?

PS - Sorry about the bad news!

That bloat factor was his system failing to remove water, commonly referred to as dropsy. It is similar in humans (ascities, edema, etc.). The kidneys or heart no longer function well enough, due to infection or other physiological reason, to pull water out of the body and they swell. It is usually an end stage of some condition, be it cancer, infection, or other.

I would still pick up the Anti-Bacteria medicated feed by Jungle at PetSmart (the only place that currently stocks it). Why not give it a try rather than watch him go slowly downhill?
