I have read that some people put Epsom Salts in their aquarium’s water - what is the purpose of doing so?

Hello, I have put aquarium salt in my freshwater tank. On the brand I use, they give directions for usage. The package says that it helps the overall health of the fish (some freshwater species can tolerate some salt) and it aids in curing the diseases. It also calms the fish. Try reading a package of aquarium salt at the store.

Here's a nice article about the use of epsom salts in aquaria.

Basically, they are used to add trace elements to the water that are not found in either non-iodinized table salt or aquarium salt.

Edit: Just to clarify, agaius, was the question about epsom salts in particular or just the use of different salts in aquaria in general?

Some fish actually prefer to have aquarium salt in their water, fish like livebearers are like that. Other fish, like cories, can stand very little salt, because it's not present in their natural environment. Usually, salt is beneficial for fish, but only if used in small amounts.

be aware that plecos and all scaleless fish, tetras and most fish from soft PH environments can't tolerate salt and it can cause organ failure and death. Dropsy can develop as a result of overdosing aquarium salt.

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

"Epsom", named after a town in the UK, is another one of those old die-hard remedies, along with salt dosing, that is not only totally useless but may indeed cause harm.

Someday hobbyists are going to wake up and stop dosing all the junk they pile into their tanks.

I don't care what other articles profess about salt or Epsom. They're all in the dark ages with dark age remedies.

If I told you I never have dosed salt or any other dark-age remedy and have healthy fish that die of old age and hurricanes, would that help??
