Well, we all occasionally get a dodgy fish in a batch, and I have one (swim bladder or TB) which needs disposing. My partner won't let me do the usual thing of banging it on the head (softy that she is), but I read somewhere on here that you can put them in a solution which effectively puts them to sleep (don't think it was an aneasthetic!) and then dispose of them.

Any ideas what the solution is?

Clove oil works, you can get it from a chemist in the dental section, used it a few times. Knocks them flat out. Just put some tankwater in a container, about 10 drops for a couple of litres and whisk it up. Drop the fish in and they generally pass out in about a minute.

I've used vodka in the past

that is funny
does southern comfort bourbon work? i have plenty of those from my 18th birthday party

well at uni labs they put anything they want to kill for experimental use in gas chambers.
carbon dioxide, soon the organism will start to feel dizzy and eventually pass out without pain

go to your local hardware store and buy some carbon dioxide

hang on....... fish is in water right?

what about feeding it to larger fish if u have it?
not really ethical either......... i'm out

here is a website for you to have a read

The vodka idea's a good easy one - does it have to be a grain derived drink? They wouldn't like whisky, like their owner

Well that link I posted says or any other similar strong grain neutral alcohol...I've actually used rum in the past w/the same fast results as the vodka. That's really the idea: quick and painless.

How do we know that alcohol doesn't cause any pain to the fish?

Um......the alcohol might have just paralised the fish's muscle and it's probably hurting just that you can't see.

How about a blender
Puree, then freeze it the you can use as frozen food.

I'd think alcohol would be relatively painless. When I'm drunk I usually don't feel anything. No vodka in this house though.

Banging his head in one shot is probably the best way and cheapest. But like me most people dont have the heart to do it. Thank God I never had to kill one of my fish.

Bucket of ice water. Works in about 10 seconds. Just put a little water in it and a tray of ice cubes. It works the same way for people that eat lobster but think its inhumane to just cook them, so they put them in the freezer first so they "go to sleep".
But yeah, Ice Water

Why anyone would waste liquor is beyond me.

do not use ice water the fish suffers severly in those conditions,

think about it, if you were plunged into ice water would you not suffer?

the vodka/alchol is the equivilent of gassing.

I think ill stick with clove oil.
Not into wasting good booze, not that
I drink much anyway.
I would never freeze a fish, after hearing
from peoples near death experiences with freezing,
and how painful and horrifying it is.
I dont care if fish are coldblooded. Freezings
not the way Id want to go, nor my animals.

Why not just use water that has no dechlorinator/chlorimaine remover in it? This would kill it and it wouldn't know it's dying... the feeder fish thing is another good choice. Alcohol doesn't seem like something that would work, though I'm no chemist.

The best solution would be to just give it a whack on the head and wait to tell your partner what your did until all is said and done.

Id not be too keen to use alcohol either, the chemical burn to the gills etc is probably exceedingly painful.

I do it with a brick.

One hit, the head is severed from the body, the spinal cord is smashed, the fish is no longer alive. No suffering, no pain.

Yeah, it's not nice, it's not pleasant. I cry afterwards. But I know it's painless, I know the fish didnt suffer, and that's the very best thing I can do for them.`

I like to think that whoever designed marine life was thinking of it as basically an entertainment medium. That would explain some of the things down there, some of the unearthly biological contraptions

I hate to say it, but gross as it sounds, it is probably the number one way to dispatch small fish instantaneously.
