Parameters: PH 7.6, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5, Phosphate 2ppm, GH 50-100 (4 drops), KH 50-100 (3 drops). Newly planted 40 gallon long tank. I have well water with a water conditioner, so my water is very soft. I am not using any additives at the moment as I've had algea issues. Green water cleared up and now it's diatoms. Lighting is 1.8W per gallon. My plants are all low-light. Finally to the question! My fantail is constantly expelling gas? bubbles from her gills and her mouth. She is fine otherwise. Eats well, and is active but I wanted to be sure this isn't a symptom of things to come. I feed a variety of flake foods and feed peas or green beans twice a week. Thank you.

I can't help much really because I've never seen it personally, but I can say that it doesn't sound like a symptom of any disease I have ever heard of. As long as everything else is fine and she seems active and healthy otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. If she appears to be gasping at the surface or lethargic then you have a problem. Your tank parameters sound great, it is impressive that you are able to keep nitrate that low in a goldfish tank, and as far as I can tell you are doing everything right. Keep in mind that you will need a larger tank for her eventually as she grows but you probably know that already.

Some fish are weird, and do weird things that we can't always explain. IMHO it could be a weird behaviour that she's picked up and enjoys for some reason (goldies are always doing silly things). I think as long as it doesn't seem to be affecting her quality of life at all you have nothing to worry about. If you really want her to stop, you could try putting some "toys" in the tank for her to play with. Marbles work, so do floating ping pong balls, anything the fish can rearrange. I don't know if she would stop doing it but if it is out of boredom it would probably help.

If she does start looking or acting like she's sick (any gasping/floating at the surface, balance problems, bobbing, lethargy, loss of appetite, bloating), by all means let us know and go from there. As far as I can tell though, she sounds like she is very happy and healthy.

Thank you for the quick, informative reply and for the compliment. I do wc's twice a week and keep the filter media clean. Goldfish are little piglets!

Quoted from that site:

Symptoms:
Fish affected by gas bubble disease may have visible bubbles under their skin/scales, or in their eyes. Or they may simply act sick if the problem is internal where you can't see it.

This fish does not have a single symptom of gas bubble disease. Did you bother to read the linked page before you posted it? Just wondering.

I still stand by what I said earlier, i don't think it is a problem but rather something behavioural.

You're right, tryst. Maybe it's "compliments to the cook" for the good food. She just burps a lot. No other signs or symptons. Thanks all.
