Dear everyone!

I am seriously panicked.

I think it was Cory Di?(hope so)that first put me on to the idea that my fish have TB.

I have had many unexplained deaths, some sudden, some very long term and none of them caused by water quailty - i have gone through three different test kit brands and had my water tested by my friends at the LFS over the last year. I understand the water cycle and do not believe the deaths are caused by Water quality.

the most recent problem has been tumors on my betta girl peaches.

the tumors started about two months ago, i thought it was a wound, and treated with myxazin, and then very clean water, the lfs offered no advice except that she would probably die if it was tumors or that it was impacted eggs and i should raise the temp to encourage her to release them.

this hasn't happened, she still eats and swims around. i have noticed that she sits on the bottom more then she used to, only moving to gulp air.

the picture of the zebra danio on the first link is pretty similar to Peaches, although her tumours are red. (I am going to try and post a pic of her in a sec -i have got a digital camera now) you have to scroll down a way on the link to get to the right pic(some useful disease pics as well if you are interested.)

I know i may be over reacting here but i have been reading various articles with quotes such as,

"From the few fish I've seen infected with it and from the
textbook cases, it appears as cysts or bumps (fairly large in
advanced stages) on the fishes body. You definitely can't mistake
it for the common diseases such as ich or velvet!"

http://fins.actwin.com/aquatic-plants/month.9706/msg00239.html

the size of the tumours are pretty big on peaches- if they were the same size on me i would have two basket balls hanging off my hips.

Also this article concentrates on the fish and syptoms,
http://www.4qd.org/Aqua/disease/tb.html

My fish have had a few of those syptoms mentioned such as,

"Loss of appetite
Progressive thinness
Sluggish movement
Folded fins
Dark coloration
Hanging at the surface" (esp in the mollies)

"overall dark coloration" (in Cichlids particularly) - that is exactly what happened to the keyhole cichild a recent death.

"Fin rot, characterised by the outer rays falling out."(guppies - currently the male is experiencing this)

A great deal of that article chimes in with my recent experiences.

As for treatment there is not much hope? Here this guy suggests treating the fish with anti bacterial meds? any one English on here know of brands available in the UK.

http://www.thekrib.com/Diseases/fish-tb.html

I am not too worried about catching it, but this article seems pretty informative, in terms of what to look for if i do catch it how cheering......

I am pretty sure it is Fish TB, I appreciate that i could have had a string of "normal illness" in my tanks but the more i read the more I think not.
I just wanted to pass this information on and ask if any one else has fish TB or knows of a way to treat it.

obviously i won't be getting any more fish. and if any one can convince me that i don't have fish TB then please try. the thought that my fish are all going to die like the keyhole cichlid is just too horrible.

so suggestions? comments?

Thanks
GFG

When I see those pictures of your betta, I can't help thinking of a boil or cyst - something that is filled with fluid or blood.

Many people see an ulcer on their fish, but didn't notice the pustule that may have started it.

Before assuming you have a terminal tank, let's look at some other possiblities. Afterall, if you had fish swimming around with the kind of bent spines as shown as that danio, we'd be more concerned about TB. It is only a possibility.

But, there is another possibility - aeromonas in which furunculosis is rooted.

Here is some reading:

http://www.spaquaculture.com/default.aspx?pageid=525

http://www.mass.gov/czm/wpfshlth.htm

From our Tammy's very own website

http://www.bluemoon.net/~tammy/profiles/ailments.html

http://www.adelaideaquariums.com.au/faqs/disease/showdis.asp?DiseaseID=22

Since aeromonas infections are treatable and TB is not, how about we take that angle. Unfortunately, unless you have access to antibiotics for your fish, it is not likely this can be brought to a halt. Medicated food would be best. We have recipes we can give you, if you can get your hands on something like oxytetracycline. Some of our UK members have had luck simply calling a vet. Others have taken pictures of their fish in with literature and were able to get the antibiotic, while others actually had to pay for consultation. Is tetracycline effective? Maybe-maybe not. You may be better off with something like trimethoprim and sulfadiazine, which are often a mixture.

Edit: I like your avatar - it took me a minute
