About 3 weeks ago, I had a pretty good build-up of green algae on my aquarium glass. I scraped it away, allowed time for the filter floss to clear the tank and did 25% water change. A few days later, I went to my lfs and purchased several new fish. One week later, the green algae came back and my fish have begun dying off, one by one (one per day, sometimes 2). Neon tetras, rasboras, precox rainbows, and golden white clouds have died. I treated the tank for bacterial pathogens since we saw signs of fin rot on a few. The tank is now cloudy. The water tests negative for ammonia & nitrates. Whats wrong? ![]() |

Have you scraped off the new algae? If so, it could be stirred up growth that is clouding the water. As for the fishies deaths...Was fin rot the only symptom you saw? Was there fungus on the fish, spots, etc? |

Did you test for NITRITES or nitrates? Nitrites are what kill fish, not nitrates. Any crawfish, or a semi-agressive fish in the tank? It seems to me you have a pretty peaceful community setup. Have you had any temperature or ph spikes or drops? (This may seem mean, but I am only trying to get a better idea) Did you dechlorinate your water and make sure it is the same temp and PH before adding it? Lastly, look for a dead fish hidden in plants or decorations that you may have missed and is rotting. I wish I had my books so I could look up diseases for you, but a friend has them. Give me a day or two. Best of luck on finding the cause! ![]() |

There are no crayfish in my tank. I tested for both nitrites and nitrates This is a pic of a neon with a weird fungus that appeared this mourning. http://community.webshots.com/album/183748821ZXFXkQ |

(pretty sure that is what it is) Take all fish out and quarantine, if possible, add meds and do a 50% water change every other day, three times. Hope this helps ![]() |
