One of my female guppies is acting really wierd. She looks pregnant and about to explode but she is just lying at the bottom of the tank looking sad for herself? (she is really fat). Is this normal for a female guppy to do this before she gives birth? Or is she dying?

Her gravid area will be really dark with fry if indeed she's about to give birth...

A pregnant female will sometimes, but not always, remain on the bottom until she releases her fry.

Look for the dark gravid area of the stomach to determine pregnancy or disease.

Hey there thanks for your message back but unfortunately when I got back from work tonight she was dead.

I never have any luck with fish, maybe I should get a hamster?

Thanks for your help anyway

Well the guppy was in my mums tank and she looked pregnant so I moved her into mine with a breeding trap and I think the actual move of her stressed her out and killed her off.

Im not too sure but never mind these things are for trial and error.

Sometimes livebearers die when giving birth. Fish deaths happen. I lost a bolivian ram two weeks ago (I have no idea why, but I had recently got it from the LFS). It's upsetting, but just stick with it, you'll be happy you did.

Besides...who wants a stinky old hamster anyway!

edit: We posted at the same time--stress sounds like it could have done her in.

This is a crazy story, but for the record:

When a pregnant guppy I had died (and yes, I was SURE she was dead), I used an exacto knife and cut her open. . .(I know it souds aweful!) I very gently "sucked" her babies out with a plastic dropper, and released them into the tank. . . Out of about twelve or thirteen fry I managed to remove, six survived, and they are happily swimming in my 26 gallon tank this very day

I was sad for my girl's death, but all was not lost!!!

*is crazy*

God that was very brave of you. I should of thought about that before I sent my Guppy to Guppy heaven. Well done for the idea and if the time comes again, ill sure to have a go at it myself so see if any babies are alive.

Yes I figured I might as well see if it was possible to save any little lives ^_^

I'm glad you might try it if worst comes to worst next time
