In our 55G (2 jacks w/new fry) tonight i noticed a "silvery" very small parasite swimming around. There was a simialr post from someone who sounds like they had the same problem... "DempseyFan" noticed bumps on new midas' side. Our male jack had a large "pimple" like bump on his head about a week ago and it's cleared now, but he has a pit where the pimple used to be. I'm most certain that's where it came from. The real question, what about the fry?? Is there another way to rid the tank of the problem without hurting the babies???

Cichlids have a bad habit of contracting parasites that burrow into their head and cause all kinds of problems...

Known as hole-in-the-head disease, it doesn't start out as a disease but the holes left buy the parasites infect and can spread all over the head.

You may have just the beginning of the problem so I would suggest you dose "Parasite Clear" as soon as possible and according to directions.

This med is popular in the hobby and does double duty for internal and external parasites. There are stronger meds for HITH but for now, and to save the fry, Parasite Clear may be the best bet.

It's always a tossup, when dosing any med, whether fry will tolerate the chemical so another tank for raising the fry may be a good idea.

Be advised that combating parasites, especially the HITH parasite, is not an easy task. Be vigilant and keep dosing until you're satisfied you've killed the invaders.

Keep your water quality at a high level and remove carbon from filters if you can. If HITH gets a head start on the Dempsey it may be impossible to stop. Make sure a nutritious diet is fed rich in Vitamins for the Dempsey.

My hubby didn't think it was HITH because of the way it looked. it sounded very much like the post from DEPMSEYFAN also... spots that were white, then turned red, and then some kind of "puss" coming out. it has been quite a few days since the "pimple" has popped. and now the free swimming parasites.

I told him that he should take some of the water out of that tank and fill up the empty 10g w/sponge filter that we have. I guess we'll just have to do that. Seems like the best alternative for saving the "big guy", the mom, and the babies.

**just a side note: I told my hubby that it was HITH and he argued that it wasn't.]:|

Thanks for your help Gary!!

I always welcome good criticism on this Site...

Whenever I read that "small pits" were left after a parasite attack around the head area, I immediately think of HITH or Heximita.

Oscars and Discus seem to be magnets for HITH but Angels and the like can also be affected.

The main symptom of this "disease", as I mentioned, is small pits mainly, but not limited to, the head area. The pits are usually whitish and may have yellowish mucus trailing from them but I've seen a variety of colors emerging.

I've seen Oscars so badly pitted around the head and face area that it barely looked like an Oscar anymore.

I've argued the point that the parasite, a protozoan, may be carried by the fish at low levels and a triggering mechanism such as a bad diet or poor water quality may be the cause of the activity onset.

The fish, experiencing the parasite, may stop feeding and become hollow-bellied.

The other post you mentioned may have been a different parasite species, one that does not favor the head area of the fish.

The product can be termed "new" but sad to say it contains most of the ingredients that are well known and used in other meds.

"Parasite Clear" has a fine reputation and has been on the market long enough to show results.
