You've got quite a load of trops there...

Your "heavily planted" tank may help to handle the nitrates but I suspect the nitrates may have risen to a dangerous level.

Dissolved oxygen in the water also will play a large role with such a large stocking of trops. When the dissolved oxygen begins to deplete some trops will react by hanging at the top of the tank and gasping while others will simply die quickly.

As far as I know there are no "Aquaclear 300 Canister" filters offered here in the States. Most are "hang-on-back" type.

You may wish to increase surface movement to provide a quicker oxygen and gas exchange considering the plants are just not doing the exchange rapidly enough anymore.

A reduction in trops should take the strain off the tank trying to maintain the high population.

Tanks can, and often do, after awhile in operation with a large fish load, start to degrade...

Do the tests I suggested and make any changes even if you have to add another filter or a powerhead to move more surface water faster.

Post back after nitrate testing with the results.
