Err.. Ok so my 10G at work, has that heater that doesn't have a temp gauge on it. I was told to turn it COUNTER clock wise to decrease the heat. So I did this yesterday just a littlebit.

But the dial is strange, you can't feel it move at all, it's like it doesn't move.

But at any rate, I get back into work today and the temp in my tank is like 96 degree's!! And I have one dead fish *so sad*.

The other one is still in there, swimming around like crazy, I THINK I turned the heat down, at least I'm trying too, and I've left the glass canopy off to expell some more heat slowly.

Now, is there anything else I can do to help him in the mean time? I know dropping the temp too fast can also kill him.

I'm going to RETURN this stupid heater, and get a different one at Petsmart I guess. The other store wanted $25.00+ for just a 25 watt heater! The one I have is the cheapist one at $18.00

I had that happen in my 20...temp went from 65-98F in a 12 hour time period >.< You're right about fighting the impulse to drop the temp too quickly. Add an airstone and try and let it cool by only a few degrees a day.

1 question though...what kind of thermometer is it? One of those stick on the tank kind or an actual submersible one? I have found that the sticky color ones generally don't work too well as they read the outside air temp as well as the tank temp.

Babel:

Nah it's one of those floating thermOmeters everyone has.
I bought one of those black sticker things, ONCE, my first time. I would alway scratch my head thinking..."Well what tempurature is it REALLY?!"

Stupid contraption. =p

He still seems to be doing ok, the thing is so cute and darling... makes me sad.

Good that he's doing okay still...office tanks can make you want to rip your hair out sometimes :%)...then you look @their cuteness and patiently glue each piece back on .

If it's floating could it be getting a false reading from the lights? Obviously the temp is high otherwise you likely wouldnt' have had the death....but it might not be as high as you think maybe possibly ....

I know it sounds crazy, but I always feel my water That way I have some idea, if the thermometer is reading 60, and it feels warm, then I know the thermometer is off...and what all...leaving the hood open is great to help cool it naturally, turn off their lights, and like babel said add an airstone...(I actually keep one of these in each tank at all times) I hope the best for you...let us know... Well it IS a floating thermometer, but it also has a suction cup on it, and it is suctioned to the side of the tank.

I know it was a lot hotter then it should of been, I could feel the heat coming off the water, and when I stuck my finger in it, I could of used it to make hot tea.

I can not put an air stone in here, the fry is much too small, about a half an inch or less, I have the filter turned way down, because they were having a hard enough time with that intake.

The only light source I normally use now, is the over head florescent lights up on the ceiling.
