Hi, I just noticed this morning that one of my guppies is sick/dying. His long tail and top fin are closed and he is swimming hard to keep his tail up at the top of the water. He is not gasping for air. He looks terrible. The water parameters are fine at 0 ammonia and nitrites. 10-20 Nitrates, 80degrees temp, ph 6.8. I don't know what to do. Help. Last water change less than a week ago.

If you haven't done a water change for a week, I would do a gravel vac and water change, this might help.

How old is he? Guppies do not live very long. A three year old guppy is a very old man. Two years is about all you can usually expect from a guppy.

Sorry your fish isn't doing well.

You could try adding some aquarium salt to the water, it may help. If there are no other visible symptoms, just this one symptom which is called Shimmy, then I would just add some aquarium salt, perhaps a dose of melafix and wait for any other signs. If you think it might be a bacterial infection you could dose with a broad spectrum antibiotic like maracyn, or try something like Jungle Brands Fungus Clear- which in my experience is a great broad spectrum antibiotic and antifungal at a cheap price. Can be purchased at any walmart. As Mike R. said, guppys dont live very long. How do you tell a male is old? Size for one, larger males tend to be older, huge well developed fins are also a sign of age. In my experience, male guppies dont reach full growth and maturity till at least 8 months old. Also, breeding desire seems to decline as male guppies age, another good sign.
Good luck and hope this helps some.
