Quarantine is the best safeguard and it is wise to quarantine at least 2 weeks and 3 is optimal. However, some fish are thought to be carriers that have no symptoms. When the fish are stressed they become vulnerable when their resistance drops. One common way fish get ich is from temp stress - in particular chilling. Power failures, heater failures, and even water changes that allow the temp to drop rapidly can spark an outbreak. Having a tank near an open window or drafty door can have the same effect. I always suggest people not alter their tank water temp more than 1-1.5 F in order to not stress the fish. How about I provide you with a link on ich so you can read more about it. The link is from Kordon, the maker of Rid Ich Plus - a popular ich medicine. Do you have ich in your tank? If so, give us parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate - if you have it). Tell us tank size and stock list. And, did you just get new fish or has this tank been running for a while?
