I have a male blue ram in my planted 20 gallon tank and it is the only ram in that tank. There are no other fish that harass it (since he is the largest in the tank), but somehow he got a small scratch on one side of his body. It appears he must have rubbed against a shark rock or the driftwood and some scales came off him. Now (after a week or so) it appears that the scratch has swelled up and it looks like there is a small zit-like lump where the scratch/wound was. Is this an infection? How can I treat it???? .....without setting up a quarentinne tank.

Melafix and Primafix are good for this kind of thing an will not destroy your cycle. It might be an infection, but you're the only one that can really tell that. Have a close look at the fish.

Can I just add those medications to the tank? are there any special preparations I should take? or do I have to set up a QT tank (which I don't want to do).

You can dose melafix without any special preparations, except you should remove the carbon from your filter or else it will remove some of the meds. Read the instructions of course, mine says to one tablespoon/10us gal a day for seven days then 25% water change. hope it helps.
