Hey all, i want to use this salt for my quarintine tank to treat ick, but i dont know if its safe. Its called redmond real salt, its not heat processed, it has no additives or preservatives and its sea salt. Now i did notice that it has .002% iodine in it, but is that the same as being noniodised? cause i know iodine is bad. Any extra minerals are trace minerals in this salt. Thanks.

Ive read raising the temp in the tank and adding a little salt is a good alternative to medications for trating Ich.

I can remember the exact temp or amount of salt though:%)

Ich should be treated in the main tank. It's one of the few diseases where its bad to treat in a q-tine tank.

Is there any specific reason why you're trying to use an old fashioned treatment when so many easily used medications are available on the market today ?

Heat must be raised to 95F+ to actually KILL ich. Temperatures lower than that will simply speed up the life cycle of the cycsts making them reproduce faster. As I'm sure is obvious most all fish will die @the temperature needed to kill ich. Therefore it should not be used as a treatment to kill ich, instead combined with medications can be used to allow the medications to work more effectivly.

Well i dont want to kill my biofilter by adding alot of meds to my tank, but i supose i could treat it in the main tank, although only one fish has the symptoms. So supposing i dont use salt, what should i use/do? Or maybe some salt, maybe a tablespoon per 10 gal and some meds also?

Use meds. If you have sensitive fish like clown loaches use a medication specially formulated for them.
I have used maracide.
In each time I used medication to treat ich the biofilter was not that badly damaged if it was damaged @all. Ich can NOT be treated using a hospital tank. I would not suggest combining salt and medications. Salt will likely bother any live plants in the tank.
Read [link=this link]http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/disease/freshwater/ich.html" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] for further information.

What kind of fish are we talking about here (how many of each and what size tank)?

Do you have inverts (pet snails, fw shrimp, lobsters, etc.)

You say they have ich. What are the parameters of the tank (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, temp)? Before doing anything you have to know how the environment is at the moment.

Did you just add new fish that brought the ich in? Or, has your tank been pretty much the same stock for 4 weeks or more? If so, then we need to understand what stressed them into ich. Chilling is common and it can happen during water changes if the temp drops abruptly by several degrees.

If you were talking about a lone goldfish in a 40 gallon tank, I'd say go for the 0.3 salt solution. However, not all fish can tolerate salt.

Also, is your tank planted or unplanted? If planted, can they be moved to quarantine while treatment is taking place?

Keep in mind the higher the temp, the less o2 there is in the water. Add to that, any product containing formalin and it gets compounded since it is a gas.

Answer all of my questions carefully.
