Most meds will destroy any bacterial (nitrifying) colonies even if the tank is cycled, thus restarting the entire process. That is why people should use hospital tanks.

Read the packages... most will tell you when it will damage the good bacteria. Of course, if you're still unsure, I'd ask here about a specific med. *shrugs*

some of them say they won't but they will, for example Maracyn I and II say they won't burt your biofilter
