First check the water parameters, to see the water quality. Then give us more information about the tank. size of tank, fish in tank, how long has the tank been going, etc. etc. The more information you give, the more answers you'll recieve.

Rams can be quite sensitive and just saying the nitrates are below 40 isn't that good. .5 nitrite is definitely bad. Rams would do better to keep the nitrates down below 20 and they won't handle a cycling tank. Your tank may not be cycled enough to have added them. An ammonia reading would be very useful. A test kit would have cost about what those fish were worth and been invaluable right now. Another possibility is that I have seen a pair of breeding rams wipe out an entire tank of fish when they felt crowded. While normally they are peaceful and aren't likely to go after tetras they don't like alot of company when spawning.

Hmm. Don't think rams will be breeding in a tank that's still cycling

My guess is that it's new tank syndrome.

But another question - why do you think that one of your rams died of parasites? Did their behavior suggest that to you? Were they not eating? Or did they have white or clear droppings?

You fish deaths may be caused by a number of things, but we need some more info to figure out for sure, and more importantly to help you so that this doesn't happen again next time

Back in the saddle!
