Hello,

I have been medicating my tank for cottonmouth with Fungus Cure for 3 days. The bottle says to take out the filter cartridge and then medicate. Then repeat after 3 days. My question is, how long do I medicate? How long should I leave the filter media out? Can I check my ph and Nitrite & Nitrate levels while I am medicating?

I have a Millenium 2000 filter and you can't just remove the carbon from the filter, because it is an all in one pack. (I have read about this in some other posts)

I'm not familiar with "fungus cure", but as far as how long to medicate, I would follow the directions of the medication. If it says to "repeat", then I would do so. I would contact the makers of "fungus cure" to see how long you can medicate for.

On a side note, are you sure it's fungus and not bacterial? Mouth "fungus", if it's just sort of white or white-ish grey, not fluffy looking, maybe it looks a bit slimy if anything...I would lean on the bacterial side.
In that case I would use a broad spectrum antibiotic such as Maracyn Plus.

Also, you can get some filter floss..the kind you can cut to size, and make you a filter pad you can slide into where the cartridge goes, so at least you have mechanical filtration.

I had 2 Seahorses with fungus. I treated them with fungicure for about 1 month before they passed on. What I am trying to say say is fungus seems to prove fatal if you have not caught it in time. ussualy if you see symptoms it is too late. Do as the directions say, do more frequent water changes, and dont change the lighting, temp, or water par. I hope you can overcome this.

good luck,
brac

ps. Be prepared for the worse. I am sorry

Thanks for the reply...but, the "fungus" is definitely fluffy white cotton puff on the top lip, on both fish. I will medicate for 3 more days, because I think there is improvement. I just didn't know what to do about the filter.

The site you gave me didn't have any cottonmouth listed. Can someone give me a site that does?

Am I able to check for my paramaters while I am medicating? The medicine turns the water blue.

Thanks.

It's under http://www.2cah.com/pandora/Disease.html#Bodyfungus, which is basically the same thing. Cottonmouth is what you have after a long night of drinking, but it's not commonly used to refer to fungus on the mouth, that I know of anyway.
What I was thinking it sounded like was http://www.2cah.com/pandora/Disease.html#External.

Either way, hope the medicine works out for ya.

If the carbon has been in the tank for a month there's very little effectiveness left...

If the med you're using is working stay with it. You can dose for another three days if the problem persists.

Maracyn Plus has been very effective in combating mouth fungus.

It's always practical to check water parameters when medicating and dose the "New Improved Cycle" to maintain a proper bacterial balance.

Thanks everyone, but I guess I don't understand how I am to check my perameters when the water is green. Won't that affect my readings? For Nitrites it is suppose to be clear, with my testing kit.

Also, haven't seen Maracyn in Australia? Does Melafix do the same thing?
