hey guys me again... anyways i have 3 fry in my 20gal community tank and their fins have been eaten off by my dwarf puffer..... they swim pretty well. i moved the puffer into a breeders net to stop him from nipping anyother fish. i want to put melafix in the 20gal tank so the fins wont die off or just incase something happens. will melafix cause any problems to my live plants, other fish? plez help:%)

Melafix, an anticeptic and a treatment for dandruff, may not be compatible with fry or for that matter the Puffer either...

Fry fins that are nipped off by other fish usually remain deformed but will not fungus if your tank water is well maintained and filtration is tops.

If you see any white fungus forming on what remains of the fry fins then a small amount of Melafix can be tried.

Melafix is safe for fry and plants. Like was mentioned good water quality is as always necessary. A treatment of melafix will help, do a regular water change and tank maintence after treatment.

And get that puffer into his own tank.

I could show you a tank full of dead fry caused by an anticeptic if I still had the customer's tank...

There are fry species that cannot tolerate anticeptics in any concentration so I never recommend its use unless the fry are diseased and there's no other way out.

The risks have to be weighed.

Seeing as I've never treated fry with it I suppose my word is worth absolutly nothing [/sarcasm]

According to their directions its been tested on fry.

Take that to mean what you will, half doses are also an option.

Your word does mean something and I'm glad you added that the product claims it's harmless to fry...

My experience shows that may indeed be true for some species but not totally accurate for some others.

I personally do not trust the claim and I realize now why you got a little put out by my earlier comments.

My apologies.
