I currently have a bala in a 10 gallon quarantine tank that I've been treating for a couple of days with melafix because its tail and dorsal fins have been severely damaged from aggressive behavior from another bala. So my question is Is there a standard length of time a should treat the tank with melafix before I discontinue using it.

Personally since melafix isn't a medication per say if you're not treating with anything else then I'd continue until you transfer the fish back to the main tank. Considering how small a 10 gallon is you'll not want to keep that active of a fish in that small of a tank for too long.
However, if you see signs of fungal finrot for example you'll want to switch to something with Nitrofurazone and Furazolidone, rather than relying just on melafix. Keep it well fed and I'd consider daily water changes as with damage like that you dont want it getting infected.
Best of luck .

There's no harm in using it longer, since as Babelfish says it's not really a medication. For fin damage I use it until the fins seem to be growing back well.
