Well, for anyone who has not read about the situation this goldfish came from, here is the link to his story: One Lucky Fish

I just saved him last night from that awful situation. Understandably, he had bloodlines in his fins (hard to tell in pics), tears in his fins (also a little hard to make out), and missing scales. Today I woke up to a wound on his red cap that was not there last night (as noted in the pics in the original post about him). I have a couple different opinions of what it could be from me describing it to a few people, but, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so I decided to try to get some good ones and see what people think it may be and think my plan of action should be. Thanks so much in advance for any help for my little guy. I want so badly for him to make it through all this trauma so I can take pictures of a beautiful, healthy fish back in and show those little twits that he was worth giving a chance!

EDIT: I also want to note that the fish is lively and eating well... forgot all about that part.

Looks to me as if he bumped his head on something... maybe that tube from the UGF (?) that's behind him in the pics from the other thread? Just looks like a cut to me. Of course, I'm not expert! *offers her trusty bottle of melafix*

He is VERY skittish, so I thought it might have been from running into the top of the hood... he ran into it pretty good last night, but nothing showed till today. I was going to go with melafix too. Thanks for your opinion.

EDIT: I just REALLY wanted to check all my bases and make SURE no one thought it was fungus or anything! Poor guy has been through enough already!

I agree, I would go with melafix and 1 tbsp salt / 5 gallons and let it heal on its own. Minor wounds tend to look very nasty on the "caps" of goldies but as long as he seems healthy otherwise and is eating, try not to worry too much over it. Given the conditions you found him in, I would say an ammonia burn is probably likely or else he could have been wounded on something, you never know... Keep his water clean, make sure he's eating good food and watch for any signs of illness, let's hope it clears up on its own.

...well, wouldn't YOU be skittish if you just narrowly escaped with your life? And had to be imprisoned on death row amidst however many of your dead brothers and sisters? Yeesh... it's enough to give anyone claustrophobia or any one of a dozen phobias! The poor thing!

Rose, I have to agree with everyone else Melafix him, it does do wonders for about everything:%)And it's no wonder he hides, little unknown at school did the same, now is friendly as the guppies...best of luck--heidi

I think perhaps it was taken wrong. I do not blame him in the least bit for being skittish. I completely understand. I tiptoe around him like he is the one paying rent here! LOL! Trust me, I am completely on his side here!

Oh, and he is only skittish when I move around his tank. He does not try to hide in the least bit otherwise! I am amazed at his activity level considering he was having trouble staying upright when I first got him. He is a good fish!

I suggest leaving the tank lights off, and if there are room lights near the tank to leave them off for a week or so while your around so he doesnt see you walking around. The more you can reduce the stress on him the better, and the better he'll be able to heal.
