First, 2 out of 3 show the symptoms I describe below. They're in a 37 gal freshwater community tank with red serpae tetra, black neons, paleatus and aneus cories and upsidedown catfish. The neon tetras are ]1.5 yrs old and have been healthy since bought. Tank info and envt parameters: temp-75 F, nitrate <40 (ppm or ppt? whatever the standard unit is), nitrites and ammonia don't show up on test strips, so those levels are low Tank has moderate quantity live plants. Wet-dry biofilter Bubble curtain I change about 12 gal every 1-2 weeks including gravel vacuuming, condition water with Stress Coat and add a small amount of aquarium salt (less that package says for general tonic because of cories). Other possibly pertinent info: about 1 month ago I had a mild infestation of Ich that seemed to infect only the cories and the black neons. One regular neon started developing these symptoms around then, and (obviously) the formalin+malachite green treatment didn't do anything for the neon tetras--which didn't seem to get Ich. Symptoms: the caudal peduncle became slightly discolored (bleached and slightly forward of that also a darkened area) and started developing what I thought might be a tumor. The "tumor" keeps getting bigger (it looks like the skin is streched around a ball in the caudal peduncle area) and recently one side of the "tumor" looks more like a zit in that it seems to be developing a head and might burst. One neon fully shows these symptoms and also appears to have lost weight although it still has an appetite and I've seen it eat. The second neon is just showing signs of discoloration in the caudal peduncle. Whew! That's about all I can think of now. Please let me known what you think about treatment, euthanizing, or other options. Thanks! |

Someone gave me this link, which shows what NTD looks like and some of the symptoms. If it is NTD, the advice you're most likely to get is to euthanize any affected fish and to scrub out the tank with a bleach solution. Hope that helps a little, you're likely to get more detailed advice in a while though. Good luck! |

Neons are not known to live long, perhaps two years or with a little luck, three, but I believe the chem dosed for ich has had an effect on their immune system causing a breakdown of resistance to many maladies, tumors/growths included. Their lifespan can now be counted in days, not weeks. --garyroland. |
