Hi Guys, I'm just new in the forum, I've been in hte hobby for 15 yeras or so . Right now I'm just running 2 tanks a 30g with a school of Black neons and a 5g with a brand new betta splendens, in fact yesterday my girlfriend bought me this one. But I didn´t notice until We arrive home that it has like a fungus infection but I´m not sure what it is, I reviewed some disease books but I'm not able to determine what the disease is, hope somebody could help me.

The symptoms are: It has like a wound over the left gill is like a bulge in the gill (inside & outside kind of weird)but it looks like an open wound with some white tissue on it, looks like a bacterial o fungus infection but I'm not sure what to steps to take, I just raised a bit the temperature but I haven't applied any medication, if anyone could help me I would appreciatte.

I don't want to return the betta to the fish store cause I know it would die, i want to give it a chance
Thanks in advance

Hector
ps please forgive my English is not my native languaje

Only thing I can suggest while someone with more experience comes along is some salt added to the tank.

Hello Hector, your english is perfectly fine

Where you are, i'm not sure what medications you can get, but if you can get 'yellow powder' that is a good thing to have on hand so i have heard (its common in singapore, i dont know if you can get it)

Where abouts are these markings? can you use the picture of the betta below and draw on it where the marks are?

bettas ordinarily have lines on the gills where the gills bend when the fish is flaring.

if it is more than that, then you will probably need to treat.

Is there any way you can get a photograph?

Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera available, I'll try to get one today.

About the Yellow Powder I don't know it, what is the active ingredient of it, maybe I could get a similar here, BTW I'm in San Luis, and beside all the LFS sucks I can get any med with a Vet.

Using your photo the "wound" is over the gill, but I'm not 100 % sure if the injury comes from the inside of it (looks like), surely it's not a mark , it's like a swallen wound (not sure if I'm clear enough to describe it). I'll try to get the camera I'know that probably is the only way that you can help me.

I'm planning a 50% water change today and I'll do water changes every other day, yesterday I applied some Methylene blue at 1 drop per liter to avoid any fungal infection and raised the temp to 28 Celcius (80 F). Not sure if salt coul help.

Thanks for your response and keep in touch please

gill rot isnt something that i've heard of, but since you redescribed the signs and placement, i'd say its possible that its a bacterial infection.

can you get Pimafix or Melafix?
that would be a good medication to start on, its relatively safe and gentle, but very effective.

failing that, you could look for Jungle Fungus Eliminator.
That is much stronger, so please watch your dosage.

Thanks Callatya,
Unfortunately He passed away last night, thanks for your advice.
Gill Root is caused by Branchiomyces.

Yesterday He was having a bad time breathing but I guessed he could make it
