I moved my blue cichlid into a bigger tank, but in the process I noticed that she only has one fin on the side! I'm very concerned.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be from? I haven't had her long, and I'm not sure I noticed this before.

I'm afraid to put her with another fish in case it would make her vunerable.

Help!!

is the whole fin gone or is there a little left. if there is some left then i would put her in a tank that you can use melafix in or you can leave her where she is and dose the whole tank it wont hurt the other fish. melafix incourages and help regeneration. i am dosing my cichlid tank right now for the same problem

It looks liek there is a tiny bit left but that it's paralized to the side of her.

Does anyone know what causes this?

I got her a from a pet store that had really crowded tanks.

Melafix and, if you can afford a bottle, dose the Pimafix for added boost too. They are by the same maker, look the same, but different names. Dosed together they make a strong antibacterial combo. Hopefully, it is just an injury and not the result of finrot. If there is infection, I think it has a better shot with the combo. Fins can grow back provided they have not eroded below the base. Even then, my criteria for allowing a fish to continue has everything to do with its ability to eat. I would never want to see a fish starve to death. But, fish manage - with one fin, one eye and so on. It is a very slow process.

I would also make sure you have salt in the tank. If you are using cichlid salt, then you are already there. I don't know what kind of cichlid this is - one that likes acid or one that likes alkaline waters. If it is the latter and you are using cichlid salt to help buffer the water, then I wouldn't add any more salt.

However, if you do not put any kind of salts in the water, consider using 1 Tbsp/5 gal of rock type freshwater aquarium salt, like Doc Wellstone. Don't put it in the tank as it can burn and if it all goes in at once can cause osmotic shock. I like to put it in a disposable glad container with holes poked in the lid. Then, I sink it and the salt takes days to dissolve - nice and slow.

This allows electrolytes to be replaced as they are often lost through open wounds or from shock. It is soothing too and mildly antibacterial. Here's how it looks when I do it.
