Hi Everybody,

I am posting this for a friend. He has a pair of pearl gouramis with fungus in their fins. I dont have much experience in treating fungus infections. Also, I am in India, so the names of medications may be different from what you would use in the US or other countries.

Can somebody suggest some meds (along with components if possible) or some home remedies if possible. I believe the attack is bad.

Thanks.

Fungus attacks start out minor and become major when ignored...

She'll have to find an antibiotic or any product that's made to combat fungus infections.

Because I'm ignorant of the available meds in India, she'll have to depend on fish store advice.

Well, you wanted some specific ingredients rather than brand names. Here goes...

Fuzzy looking things can either be true fungus or a bacterial infection. Color can help to some extent. If it is more grey or cream colored, it is likely bacterial. If it is snow white, then it may be true fungus. It can be hard to tell.

If it is bacterial, it may respond to erythromycin, furacyn, or any number of other antibiotics including tetracycline and sulfa combinations. Acriflavine, an antimicrobial, is also effective.

If it is true fungus, then it may be more difficult to cure. Methylene Blue is good, but acts more as a preventative. If the fish is alone or can be isolated, and you believe it is not bacterial, then Malachite Green may work. Here is a write up on a version Kordon sells. Scroll down to Medications and choose it from the list [link=http://www.novalek.com/kpds.htm]http://www.novalek.com/kpds.htm" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

As Gary suggested, see what products are available in India for "fungus". Many products contain things that inhibit both (such as chloride salts).

Either way, your friend can't go wrong with salt treatment. Use Freshwater Aquarium Salt from a fish store. For a short bath, you can use 15-20g for each litre of water for 10-45 minutes. Stay with the fish and if it should look stressed or go to its side, immediately return to freshwater. For a long bath, use 1g to 12.5 litres of water (if water is soft) and 3g to 10 litres if water is hard.
