I keep losing my cats. Every time I buy a new one he dies in about 1-2 weeks. I am working on my 3rd now. Water tests fine...normal ph, low nitrites, low amonia, low salt, and low nitarates. My LFS keeps testing my water as well and they have no explination. I have a 20 gal tank w/ 1 small pleco, 3 swordtails, 1 molly,3 red eyed tetras. Any ideas??? THanks.

Partiallly stress. Pictus need a 55 gallon tank as a minimum They are active and schooling fish and IMO do NOT work in a 20.
low nitrites, low amonia, low salt, and low nitarates.

NitrItes and ammonia need to be zero, anything else is going to causes stress and death. I don't believe pictus appreaciate salt (they're sensitive about things such as that) so if you're adding salt for the other fish that's going to cause a problem.
Additionally I'd suggest picking up a master test kit. We need to know actual numbers for your water not just "fine" or "no problem".

Thanks. I have the standard dip strips that do all the tests. My LFS did the legit tests, but I can't remember the actuall levels. Guess I need to try something else instead of the pims.

Dip strips in my experience are not very accurate. Depending on the lfs their tests may not be accurate as well, or staff properly trained . For bottom feeders in a 20 I'd suggest small and not very active as the tank just doesn't offer much room to play in.
