The topic is pretty much it. I'm treating mouth fungus in the morning & need to know if I should remove carbon from filter? Bottle says maintain normal filtration and air. Just wanted to double check to b sure.

Alot of them say that, but you should always remove carbon when treating with meds. Carbons roll in your filtration is to remove contaminants...unfortunatly carbon molecules cannot tell the difference between what you do want in you water and what you don't want in your water. After you're finished with the the meds, running carbon will remove it.
HTH a bit

As a side note...

If your carbon is a month old or more there's no need to remove it.

I treated a discus for popeye a few weeks ago with maracyn. I left my carbon filter in but It was more than a month old. The meds worked, but the maracyn broke the cycle in my 10 gal hospital. So be aware of your water quality. I was showing .25 mg/L of ammonia after the 5th recomended dosage. Good luck with the fish.

Most, if not all, antibiotics will kill all bacteria in a tank...

The good, the bad and the ugly.

That's why the dosing of a bacteria starter like the New Improved Cyle is a must, repeat, must, when medicating.

He's asking about Maracyn Plus in particular. You do not need to remove the carbon and it will not harm the biological filter. You do not need to dose NIC. You do not need to do water changes in between dosing. The antibiotics do not treat the water, it treats the fish. It attaches to the fish, directly, via microscopic spheres. It does not release the antibiotic into the water. In other words, if it is not stuck to the fish it is not doing anything. Even if the antibiotic could affect the biofilter, it cannot given its method of delivery.

Hope that clears it up.

edit - there are numerous antibiotics ( legitimate antibiotics ) that will not affect the biofilter )

Thanks again Jake. I was planning on using new improved cycle after the treatment is done.

I'm sure adding NIC hurts nothing , so if it makes you feel better to do so after using the maracyn plus, it's always an option, but not necessary.

Also, if using Maracyn Plus during a cycle and the cycle "broke" , I would look elsewhere for the culprit.

One more question. Two out of five of my flame gauramis that are in the hospital with mouth fungus now look fine, have been for awhile. I was wondering if I could put them in my disease free 72 gl tank or wait until the treatment of maracyn plus is finished? I want to B confident that my big tank will not get this disease. Or how long should I keep them in the hospital before tranfering when all signs of fungus is gone?? Any tips of how NOT to carry over the disease to my other tank? I'm am SO worried that I'll never get rid of this since it has been SO hard to remove!!( When using maracyn Plus will the mouth fungus look worse before getting better?)Thanks for the help.

Maracyn Plus is a different antibiotic molecule than Maracyn and is a liquid.

However, don't count on its effectiveness.
