I rescued two fish from my brother's 10g tank: An albino dojo loach and a large silver dollar. He has never cleaned it since it was set up a year ago, and the nitrates are off the mark. He never turns on the light or feeds them. He's almost 20 years old-- it's RIDICULOUS that he can't tank care of his fish. He did the same thing to his poor late chinese water dragon. I wish mom and dad would stop spoiling him and giving him money to buy these doomed creatures (I'm 16, by the way).

Enough complaining.

I have these two in a heavily planted 55g now. The dojo loach is spending most of its time hiding, I guess it just needs to adjust. I just found out the silver dollar will eat my plants, so he'll find a new home soon (could he be with african cichlids? I assume not...)

But, the silver dollar has a weird cloudiness to his eyes. No trouble with vision as far as I can tell. Could this be from the lights in his old tank never coming on, or could he be ill?

could be bacterial, could be a chemical type burn from the bad water, see how it pans out i think, just watch it.

with good water it should pick up and clear up.

when he is in good water quality for about 2 weeks his eye will be fine.

Also turning the light on has nothing to do with the health of a fish.

I only turn my light on for about 30 min a day just to feed htem..

Smantzer - take it from one who knows - you're not alone with ignorant and neglectful fishkeeping siblings :-) I have the same issue with mine (although he's younger in my case).. Breaks every rule in the book, and still manages not to kill them (somehow) so thinks he's doing Ok :-P
