jacnyr,

IMHO, my first thought was that he might be at the end of his lifespan, but, given that these guys get over 10 years old and you have him only for one, that would be only the case if you got him already when he was old.

My next thought might be an internal parasite that has been introduced when you added the plants 2 weeks ago.

Say, does he do this also in the mornings when the lights turn on?

I would suggest that you try to place him in a quarantine tank (if you have one) with no sharp rocks etc. This way he doesn’t harm himself anymore and you can treat him for the injuries he received.

For my parasite idea, let’s get more opinions here before you start a treatment.

Yes fish had done this in morning, I do not turn lights on until just before I leave for work at 3 pm. My girlfriend is suppose to turn lights off before she goes to bed. I don't mean for them to be on until I come home at 2 am.
All for naught as firemouth has died.
I did have some duckweed that fish gobbled up pretty quick. I wish I could find something that they will not bother.
Thank you for your reply

Is it possible for fish to have some type of seizure. That is the only way that I can explain what had happened to him.
I mean it darted about, then went motionless floating on his back.
