Came home from work today to find my pearl gourami very swollen looking around the gills, but behind them. I noticed a little swelling yesterday, but he seemed fine and was eating. He did not eat today when I fed them. He is kind of listless and hanging near the top, but not gasping. I went through the disease section, but didn't see anything that described what I'm seeing. Any ideas???

It might be gill worms, I believe they are called. I'm not sure as to the symptoms, but that might be a start. Is it breathing hard? That would most likely be an indication that the gills are being infected or something, but you should get a second opinion.

Just had a thought. Could she be pregnant? Could different species of gourami breed together? I had a gold gourami in the tank for about a month. I just removed him a few days ago because he was chasing all the other fish. Is that possible or am I grasping?

No, I'm pretty sure that different species can not breed together. Besides, gouramis can't get pregnant like that, they lay eggs. If there had been any spawning, there would be eggs in the tank, and they probably would have hatched by now.

Are the gills red as well? Can you give us the readings of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH?

Sorry for the delay, I didn't have much time to spend on the tank this weekend. The gouramis gills are not red, just swollen. She doesn't seem as lathargic as she did last week. While she is more active, she's not eating very aggressively if at all. I tested the water on Sat morning.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 40
pH 7.5
GH 9
KH 3

The GH and KH numbers may be reversed. I'm working from memory (which can be scary at times) since I don't have my notes in front of me.
