I have a Tiger Barb that is sick but I don't know what it is. He is breathing heavy, flashing every once in a while and not eating. There are no visible white spots and he's been like this for almost a week. Any ideas?

well i'm no expert but a raise in temp decreases solubilty of gases such as oxygen which would explain the breathing but i think its more than that

I'm pretty sure my water parameters are ok. This is a new tank that cycled for a month and I just started stocking it a few weeks ago, so I could have gotten a sick one. All the other fish appear to be fine. No apparent stress. I kind of wondered if the sick Tiger Barb may have gotten into it with one of the others because they are going through their "pick the leader" ritual which I heard was common with Tiger Barbs. Some fights in the beggining, but that has settled down now.

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - 8
pH - 7.2
temp - 77F (25C)

Never mind, its Ich. Some of the Tiger Barbs have white spots on their tails. My guess is that the first sick Tiger had it in his gills before the obvious external white spots appeared. That would account for his heavy breathing and loss of appetite. I'm treating with Rid-Ich+.

Actually, you are not supposed to raise the temperature because of its effect on oxygen levels. This puts more stress on the fish. I've read that in the instructions and in several articles on Ich treatment.

If you add an airstone and raise the tank temp at the same time, you'll be cool. That's actually recommended as far as I've read, and that combo worked well when I had to treat for ich.

i cured a case of ich this week that was introduced on a new plec sucsessfully without loss, by increasing the temp slightly (couldnt take it too high as i have cories) and treting with a good med. but i already have more that adequet airation.
i agree that if you are treating and raising the tempreture it is important that you makesure there is plenty or airation.
