Hi all!
We have a neon who is looking rather pale these days. I'm a little worried because we had one about a month ago that got pale and then died. I'm just trying to figure out if there's something we should do for it (haven't done anything yet), or if we should let nature run its course?
Tank and stocking are in my profile, pH is 7.6, ammonia and nitrite are 0 (don't have a nitrate test, but it is cycled), last water change was about a week and a half ago (about 1/3), next water change planned is for tommorrow night. These neons are in a school of 7, 2 are about 3 months old and the rest we've had for a couple weeks (don't know if the sick one is new or old though).
Here's some pics (I'm a little worried about the white in the fading red).
Thanks!

Any Neons that display fading/graying of the red stripe should be destroyed immediately...

Neon Tetra Disease will, in time, infect the whole tank with several deaths occurring. It is highly contageous.

The tank, gravel and all contents must be cleaned with Clorox household bleach, a 50-50 mix with water...

Well, the faded one is darker today, but there is still a large white area at the base of the tail. Is this really NTD, or something else?
Thanks!

I would get your neons out of the tank as quickly as possible.

Hi,
Perhaps I should be a little more specific when I say a "white spot". The colors are fine again, but there is a white patch on the top of the base of the tail in the red. A couple days ago, it was actually sticking outside of the fish's body. Is this some kind of parasite that has infected the fish?
There are 6 other neons, 6 zebra danios, and 1 angelfish in the tank right now also.
Thanks.

Do you mean the thing that was sticking out? Or the white spot? The white spot is a white spot in the base of the tail. The thing that looked like it was sticking out was the same white color, but just looked like a little dot sitting on top of the base of the tail. If you look at the pictures I posted, you can see the white spot I'm talking about, but it isn't as bad today as when I took the picture.

The pale patch in the second photo does worry me some. I really would suggest moving this one to a seperate tank. If I remember correctly you have a small tank that's not in use ATM...if so I'd suggest removing it for now, if you find the need to euthanize later, so be it.

You may want to quarentine all the neons for now, @the very least get the one that's showing symptoms out and watch it closely.

^_^
