I decided to recycle my tank (30g), with my old fish, then add new ones on monday. As soon as I had changed the water and placed all the fish back into the tank, I saw that my female swordtail had 3 white "dots" on various parts of her body. I immediately added the medication so that should not be a problem.

I was thinking of returning this sword and a dwarf gourami I have since they have been acting rather strangely. The dwarf stays at the bottom for long periods. I have had it for a month and can't find anything wrong with it, nor has it affected my other fish. The sword on the other hand has a black string constantly hanging from it, and I'm sure its not parasites. The sword too I've had for more than a month shes active. All the other fish are fine very active.

I am still planning to change these two fish on monday and get some plants and fish.

Can anyone guess as to what the problem could be with the sword and gourami?

Thanks.

WOW! That got long.

I don't know what is going on with the Gourami, aren't they supposed to eat veggies? Maybe it's like what I've been told, don't over feed him or they get really lazy, and inactive...

As for the platy, it's sounds like a feeding of peas will fish her problem. If the strand is coming from her anal area, then well, it's feaces. What you do, get some frozen peas, defrost 2-3 of them (I'm counting on the Gourami eating one or two, plus whatever else might be in the tank). Defrost/Cook them under HOT water until they are tender. Cool them off with some cool water. Then go to the tank. I tend to mush them inbetween my thumb and pointer finger so the insides pop out mushy, keeping the skins to dispose of later. That's it...do it in the morning and evening for a couple of days, and it sure fix her problem, and it might help the Gourami also.

Best of luck, Heidi

Thanks alot, I'll try that. Actually I don't overfeed the fish just what they eat in 5 minutes.

Still thinking about changing them though.
