Fish:
2 Flame Tetra's
1 Bolivian Ram
1 Blue Ram

Temp a steady 83 degrees F
I am constantly adding water
frequent water changes
use aqua plus water conditioner
all other fish healthy except one flame tetra
Fluval 1plus filter
Elite heater

My female tetra's spine is bent a bit at adipose fin, she is fat but does not over eat. She tends to lean on her side and sometimes spin. There is nothing wrong with colour, fins, or eating habits. Only about 3/4" long. She swims funny and is not very active anymore.

I will soon be getting a bigger tank. Hopefully 30 gal or more.

Oh my. I'm no expert, but bent spine tends to be a sign of piscine tuberculosis, I think (If I'm wrong, please correct me someone?). also, she may be injured. Is she fat as in bloated?

Sounds like swim bladder can the fish maintain her balance in the water.

She cannot maintain her balance very well. I can't really tell if she is just bloated. Like she had been fat like this for a couple of weeks. I didn't think much of it. She's not really that fat but compaired to the male tetra, she is. Could it be that she is just preparing to lay eggs?!?!? I really don't know.

I agree with Kitty, it sounds like swimbladder problems. Tubercolosis would have a larger variety of symptoms I think, and probably be affecting more of the tank.

Course, I'd like to be optimistic concerning tubercolosis, since it is a tank killer. For now just keep a watch on the fish, and if she seems to grow larger/bloat, look up her symptoms and any others, since bloat with balance loss can mean a lot of different things.

My advice is just to keep a good watch for now.

a bent spine can come from TB, or not getting enough nutrition in their diet.

ALso, why is your tank temperature so high?

Loss of controll when swimming is also a symptom of neon tetra disease. NTD will infect all fish, not just neon tetras.

As I'm sure you know tetras are schooling fish and do need groups of 6+.

Can you clarify loss of balance? Is it like the fish is trying to swim, but keeps wanting to float up to the top, or can't get off the bottom? Or, is it more like a sudden whirling motion, where the fish tries to swim straight, but is winding.

How is the spine bent? Is it a sharp jog you can see from the side, the top, or both? Can you post a pic? If you mean it has curvature due to a bloated belly, that is different, but a sharp bend is a "bent spine".

How is the color? http://www.2cah.com/pandora/Disease.html#NTD

Look also at the base of the fins for blood pin-points or elsewhere, like at the belly.

I would isolate at the very least. This fish could very well have NTD. If you transfer to a rubbermaid bin with as much of its own tank water as possible you minimize stress transfer. Keep in a warm room and put a bubbler in there along with a fake plant and a lid. Otherwise, consider humanely euthanizing. The only purpose in isolating is to observe to see if it worsens without putting other fish at more risk.

Temp seems a bit high, but that's just my opinion. If anything, I'd lower 1F daily until you get to 78F. There is less o2 in high temp waters. You'll have to add less water due to evap too.
