This morning i woke up and found 7 of my 8 black neons dead, just disspeared and my blue ram gone. My heater might have broken, the temperature in my tank was 74° when i found all the deahts and it is usually at 80°. I think this is what caused all the deaths. Maybe?? Any ideas?? Luckily my paradise fish, 2 neon rainbows, and corydoras habrosus are still alive.

Don't know if the loss of your fish would have been caused by a temperature dip to just 74 degrees as the neons and ram should have been able to tolerate that and the drop wouldn't have been instantaneous, but at least semi-gradual over a period of time.

If the heater broke, then that may be what did it. Not sure how though. Maybe one of the electrical components broke and some sort of current was sent through the water? Or maybe is was just the shock of the temp drop? Although I'm not sure about that - I mean, it would be one thing if you added cold water to the tank so that the temp dropped to 74 from 80 in a matter of seconds/ minutes - but if the heater turned off the fall would be rather gradual. I can see the rams being overly stressed by it, but I'm surprised that the black neons would die so easily.

Sorry for your loss

Heater malfunction should be easy enough to check, just turn the temp up to see if it clicks on. If you've recently turned the AC on and your heater is underrated it may not have been able to handle the cold, and either broken or just not been able to raise the temperature high enough.
I agree that I can't see how a temp shift would cause them to dissapear. Even one as relatively large as that wouldn't have happened instantaneously.
Did you check the filter and surrounding area of the tank for missing fish? Behind plants, ornaments ect?
For that many to go missing all of a sudden is a bit odd. Did you check with everyone in the household that they didnt spray anything around, or spill anything into the tank
Sorry for your loss .

Check the heater & see if it's broken or not. I don't think that a gradual 6° drop might be that vital for the fish.
