AquaClear 150 filter fish: 2 3cm guppies adding 1 or 2 more. 1 4cm platy, adding another 3cm and 2 1 week old platy fry in about a week. 2 4cm bristle nose catfish Ammonia:0.0 Nitrite:0.0 Nitrate:5.0 Ph:7.2 Gh:11dGH Temp: 25 degrees Problem: I had a Platy in with the 2 guppies and 2 brislte nose. It suddenly stopped eating, sat under the heater misrebly, and caught suspected dropsy. All the other fish fine. Water Parameters the same as above. We took it to an aquarium where it was treated for dropsy. They found some big flat worms on it, with hooks. They kept treating it, but after a while it just passed on. All the other fish in the tank, were fine and are still fine. Then we added another platy that had babies in the qurantine tank. After a few days with the babies, she went into the main tank, and immediately was not herself. She suddenly stopped eating, is sitting under the heater, and she keeps clamping her fins, and swimming backwards into one of the guppies. She looks like she is trying to mate with them. Can anyone help me? Tahnkyou! ![]() |

Take a look at the pics in this link. Does it look like lernea (anchor worm)? [link=http://www.2cah.com/pandora/Disease.html#Lernea]http://www.2cah.com/pandora/Disease.html#Lernea" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] Try to describe the parasite better - color, length, shape, texture - as best you can. If the fish had some type of parasite (internal or external), they create an entry for bacteria. Fish can then get a systemic infection and such infections often result in dropsy near the end. Do you use salt? If not, take about 1 Tbsp of freshwater aquarium salt and pre-dissolve it in about a cup of tank water. I use an oversized empty water bottle and shake it vigorously. Once it is dissolved, only dribble in a small amount of the solution and keep repeating that over two days. If you use a level Tbsp, it will be just under half strength and if added slowly, should not harm the bristlenose. The amount I'm suggesting certainly won't kill off parasites, but it will restore electrolytes any fish are losing do to entry wounds. It is therapeutic. We need to know more about these parasites before we consider any type of treatment for that. BTW - that tank is most likely going to be too small for those fish, especially two bristlenose. Are you planning a larger tank? |
