My girl friends comet Goldfish is acting lathargic, spends most of the time headup at a 45 degre angle. Its fins are turning a redish brown color. Her tank has regular water changes and we checked amonia and nitrats bolth 0. i think it might be a bacteria or virus because she just recently added a new fish. Does anybody know what this is and any treatment methods.

Can you post a picture? I can think of 2 or 3 things it could be but we need more info; all your current test results, temp, tank size. My first thoughts were, Fin rot, Septicemia, or a Bacterial infection. Even though your ammonia and nitrates were fine it could be caused by a poor diet. What is your girlfriend feeding the fish? You can do some searches of your own on those but until we get more info or/and a picture no one will be able to nail it down. http://thegab.org/Articles/GoldfishIllness.html This would be a place to start. Good luck!

If all the tests are ok and she keeps the water changed, like I said it could be diet and tank size. You do not mention the tank size, but I assume you are aware of the tank requirments for gold fish. Right?

This is what I would suggest though everyone has their favorite medicines http://www.petco.com/Shop/petco_Product_R_8717_PC_productlist_Nav_227_N_24+93_sku_122971_familyID_5973.aspx You do not have a flag on your profile so I dont know if your in USA but you should be able to find this most anywhere. Later!
