I am in need of your expert advice again!! One of my fish has developed a white film over its entire body. (Looks like peeling sunburn – but patchy and white.) It is one of those black goldfish with the bulging eyes. I am unable to determine what the cause of the problem was – or more to the point what I’ve done wrong.

I have been:

* Doing 25% water changes weekly and using the water conditioner in this new water

* Checking Ph Levels weekly (all have a PH of 7)

Doing ammonia checks weekly (ammonia levels are 0)

* Cleaning the filter weekly using water only

I haven’t introduced any fish recently. What do you think I should do? The other black fish that I have has a little bit of white on it – which is getting me worried the same thing is going to happen again. The other fish seem healthy.

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like columnaris, but not to sure, I think with slime desease it's more of a greyish film.

Hi, It seemed to appear very white and looked like it was peeling. The fish was totally paralysed - just on the bottom of the tank. What treatment do you think I should use?

Thanks!

I had a guppy who had this kind of disorder...she even had a film over her eyes. I gave her a 3% salt bath and treated with pimafix. She's slowly getting better and the film is cleared up.

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!

You could do a salt bath, but make sure the fish that is ill can tolerate salt.
