hi all
Ok, im not much help on the technical side here, just that a have a 50 english litre starter fluval tank (this is basically a breeding tank for the guppys), with:
4 killifish (new additions within past day or so, which i must point out i forgot to quarantine but couldnt really with no spare tanks)
4 guppys
3-4 danios and something else about the same size of whose name i cant remember but are harmless.
The question is, i had an albino chinese (the worst kind most aggressive i think) algae eater, he died today and was floating upside down with brown stuff coming from his gills, i guess this is congealed blood but wouldnt have a clue, any help would be appreciated
thanks

Could be that the water has become toxic, its about the only thing i have had that caused massive haemorraging.

Is the tank cycled?
Were you feeding the catfish specifically?
Do you have an ammonia test kit?
When you change water, how much do you change at a time?

I would suggest holding off buyying a replacement for the time being as your stocking may be too much for the biofilter to handle at the moment. And when you do, CAE, even the albino ones, aren't the best choice for those little fish and that size tank.

no i totally agree with that only my dad wanted it as he thought it had character and he paid for all of the stuff that day if i would get it!
I dont think it can be what you said as none of the other fish show any signs of anything at all.
Tank is quite old so yes cycled and i do about 15% probably more once a week which i think is sufficient for the load no?
Let me know if im wrong, after all im new!
thanks

Ah, sorry Moose! You didn't highlight on my threads list *grumble*

30% sounds fine, but is that with a gravel vacuum as well, because if not, the food and gunk just rots away in the gravel and will make for a rather ikky tank.

I have had a few CAE just drop off the perch for no reason i could find, even in a larger tank. It is possible the brown stuff was bacterial or fungal growth, and not old blood. Did the fish look like he had been dead for a while? (usually if they are floating its been a little while anyway)

Also, were you feeding him? i mean, more than leftovers from what the other fish ate, did he get algae wafers and the like?

Sorry nobody got back to you i shall make sure i check it daily now

ah no probs at least some1 did in the end!

Actually now you mention it i never did feed him anything! basically cos i didnt mind if he died so he must have been scavenging all his life.
He wasnt dead for too long however, i'd say at the most 7 hours in the tank while i was at work so i dont know if thats a long time.
Just want to get to the bottom of this so i can think about getting a replacement
thanks

well, i think thats fairly well solved, they do waste away if you don't feed them, they are big eaters!

next time, think small, and remember to feed the little guys

Ahh, thats good, i was a little concerned that it had slipped your mind (it happens you know, poplke are convinced that they eat poo for some reason) so i'm glad to know you tried.
