Hi, my friend has a 20 gallon freshwater tank with a map turtle, a baby goldfish, two baby plecos and he had two snails: a really big one with a white body and a little brown one.
I realize the tank is too small and the fish are going to get bigger, but this tank is very temporary.
My question is this: about a week ago we noticed the big snail had died, and it seems as though the other one is looking sick and possibly about to die. He said something about the shell looking deteriorated.
Does anyone know what this could be? Do the snails have some sort of disease, and should we worry about the other fish or the turtle?
The tank is kept extremely clean, and he feeds his plecos those little algae tablets that the snails sometimes feed on. Were they possibly not getting enough food?
Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Well idontknow, I think that one of the fish is aggrivating the snails a whole lot. But that is a theory, however, I have had a problem like this in small Ramshorn Snails. It seems that sucker fish such as your Pleco love to suck on snail shells. I know it sounds crazy, but it happened to me. And over a long period of time, the shell will become white, cracked and if the sucking persists, deteriorate. I have no idea how on earth to stop it, and not entirely sure that this is the case, it just happened to mine. If this is the case, however, I suspect your friend's fish may not be eating enough. Anyway, I hope this helped you in some way.
