what do you do with your hospital/quaranteen tank when it is out of commition?

how do you change to "emergency"?

what's in your hospital tank regularly, and what is inserted when it is needed?

Great questions! If you have a hospital tank with no fish, how do you maintain the bio filter? If you have no bio-filter how can you maintain your fish in quarantine?

Simple thing is to maintain a small hardy fish in your hospital/quarantine tank to maintain your filter. Since the tank is a holding area and may be used for fish triage, I like to maintain the tank with substrate and simple filtration.

A sponge filter works well as you can seed it by running it for a couple of weeks in your main tank then shift it to the h/q tank. The big advantage of the sponge compared to other filters is that there is no need to purchase cartridges that you may have to pull apart to remove carbob.

Danios or another inexpensive fish will help maintain the filter until the tank is needed for the new purchases or as a clean room.

Thanks Bob,

Your answer here saved me from having to post pretty much the same question.

Makes a lot of sense, but there is one thing that I am still unclear about.

What do you do with the “filler” fish(ies) during the time of the actual quarantine for your new fish? Do you leave it in there?

Sorry Fry for just jumping on your thread,

Ingo

well.i bought a hospital tank...a 10g..but ended up setting a new tank (i just cant resist the urge)...anyways, if i do have one...if its out of commision...there r 2 options... if im goin to empty it..and in case theres an emergency...ill use the water from establised tank as well as some of the filters... and if in case that its running....ill make sure that theres at least fish in there to provide constant fud (ammonia) for my bioload.

Little Fish,

Just leave your "filler fish" in the tank...

i thought about having two bettas in my small h/q tank for maintainence.

sure, they'll have to come out of there in case of emergency, but they can survive the transition to pretty bad conditions (small containers) for a week or two (that if i can't find them a better place in the meantime).

maybe even make that tank a breeding tank for them. got to work out the details about that.

LF, i'm happy to interest you too hop along!
