It might be a different disease, and i'm a little confused by what you posted. One of the most important things with fin rot is to monitor your NitrAte levels. You haven't posted any parameters for your tank (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate... +pH), so it's very ahrd to tell if the medications are doing anything. Test, in particular, for NitrAtes, and post your results. The best way to counter high nitrates is to increase the size and regularity of water changes. 20% is a good number, on a daily basis, and it appears you are changing about 6G anyway, which is about 20%. Melafix wont do anything if your fish have a fungal fin rot. Melafix is an anti-sceptic, and you need and anti-bacterial medication like Maracyn, which you are already using. Save your fish from the chemical cocktail, and stop using the MelaFlex (or Melafix) now. Just follow the direction on the Maracyn. Also, there is no need to be dosing with salt, especailly not in the quantity you are. Are you using aquarium salt(or pure rock salt)? If not, that's even more reason to stop. The aquarium salt will have directions on it for a mixing ratio. Normally, it's about 1 teaspoon per 30gallons. Don't forget with salt, that it doesn't evaporate like water, so it will remain in the tank unless you remove the water. So, if you choose to continue dosing, only add engough salt to dose the water you are adding to the tank. Last... gravle vacuum!! This is one of the best tools for removing the debris that will cause high nitrates. |

I personally wouldn't use that amount of salt, but if you've been doing it with success... it's up to you. If your Nitrates are below 25ppm, then the finrot was most likely fungal, so the Marcyn should have taken care of it. Just watch your nitrates over the next few weeks, and make sure they stay below 15ppm (5ppm would be better...). Make sure you keep gravel vacuuming, and doing a weekly water change, and everything should be fine. |
