we have a 75g tank. it has been running for about 7 weeks now. water parameters are:

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
pH 7
nitrate 10

we have noticed that the gouramis, cichlids, danios and peppered corys are going up to the top for air more often than ever before.
the other fish in there are not doing it at all.

is this a problem??

p.s stocking lists on profile

thank you

Any chance this is the tank you and hembo are currently treating for finrot?
If so the fish may be effected by the medications, even though you're not seeing the ammonia resgistering on your test. Do you notice it more in the morning vs. afternoons or is it fairly consistant? What type of filtration and surface agitation is running on the tank currently?

yes it is that same tank. it seems to be consistent throughout the day. it has a juwel jumbo internal filter, 2 air stones and a hagen co2 system.
we treated the tank last friday and saw a slight ammonia rise sunday. ammonia is back to 0 again today

I suspect that it may still be a result of the medication. In which case the airstones will help. However something else should be pointed out and that's that with a planted tank that is recieving CO2 like yours is you don't want the surface agitation that the airstones are providing.
Just something to consider once you're finished with medicating. For now however, disconnect the CO2 and go with the airstones. The plants are likely to pull thru better than the fish will .

I have heard that too much Co2 can also have the same effect.

In your case I would turn it off get plenty of air movement going as quickly as possible until all has settled down. Then readjust your Co2 and keep a good on it.

I hope my little bit helps.

we have now removed the co2 feed and doubled added an air inlet to the powerhead to give much more aeration.
fish seem not to be going for the surface as much now.
thanks

Glad it seems to be working Hembo and Wendy. Keep an eye on your ammonia levels and make sure you leave the air running for a while after you're done with the medications. It'll take a bit for the biofilter to recover from any damage it suffered.
After that you may want to reevaluate the co2 usage in the tank as when the lights are off both plants and fish use the oxygen. If the plants are using it there's less for the fish forcing them to go up for air. If you alternate air and CO2 you essentially undo all the work the CO2 has been doing for you. Take into account how much light and how heavily planted the tank is when you make your decision.
