Hello. I added 3 neon tetras to my ten gallon last night. This morning I noticed that one had one ich spot, so I added a teaspoon of rid ich. I raised the temperature to 81 degrees. Is that too high? I can't remember, and I have to cook supper so don't feel like searching. I have 1 dwarf gourami, the neon tetras, two platy fish, 3 zebra danios, and one apple snail.

Will all of these guys be okay in that high of a temp. Should I put the temp back to normal since i'm using the rid ich and added a little salt? Oh, and what exactly is the benefit of raising the temp anyway?

I had to treat my platys for ich about a month ago, and I remember being advised to raise temp and add salt. What say you?
thanks, littletank:%)

Raising the temp will allow the ich paracite to go thru it's life cycle faster. It's only after the cycst (the little white spot) has fallen off that it can be killed by the medications that you've put in.

Altering the temp alot will cause stress. And stress can lead to ich. I'd suggest leaving the temperature where it is. Increase surface agitation if possible with an airstone.

I have always been advised to raise the temp but this seems not to be the rule today.

Several other things that you can do though.

Certainly add more air to increase the water surface.
Turn the lights off.
Dont feed for a few days.

Finally if you are getting this problem from the one Aqu shop tell them then go and find another one.

Why should I turn the lights off? I mean I will. I'm just curious. I'm majoring in Biology education (highschool biology teacher), so I like to know all the scientific stuff if possible. It interests me very much. Now that the temp is at 81 degrees should I just leave it there until i'm done with the ich or should i gradually lower it back to 77?

It amazes me how fast these parasites spread. She had one this morning at 8am and by 5pm she had two more spots. I hope the rest of the fish don't get it.

ALL of the platy fish at ALL of the fish stores in the area have ich and clamped tails/fins right now, so it's strange that the neon tetra has it and not my new platy (she was the ONLY platy at Petsmart without ich or clamped fins). I checked Pets unlimited,Wal-Mart, Durel's pet shop, and the Tropical fish Bowl. Petsmart was the only place that had a platy with no ich. Anyway, I thought this was strange.

Actually nothing all that scientific. Just a trick used by parents and kindergarten teachers everywhere. Lights off is quiet time, quite time for the fish is just as important. Ich is often a result of stress. Even if the stress was caused by a bad acclimation or a sudden temp change the lights out will give the fish time to relax as the meds work. Additionally some meds are photosensitive.

A fish not showing signs of ich doesnt exactly mean much. Ptsmrt could have just gotten their shipment in that day, or the cysts could have just fallen off...or there's always the possiblity that someoen there knew something about fish.

All I can say is that I was told that when I first started an Aqu 30+ years ago. Yes it is to eliminate stress as a quiet darkened tank will help in their recovery. I know I have read it some where many years ago but it does not seem to be in any recent publications I have read. I have even seen a blanket placed over a tank to help with stress problems

It makes a lot of sense. I feel bad though because I JUST turned their light off right before I logged on. Ooops! It has been on for 12 hours. I normally turn it on at 8am and off at 5pm. I forgot today. I should probably turn it off when I leave home to run errands and stuff. The tank is in the master bedroom so it's kind of out of sight out of mind after I'm dressed for the day, you know. Oh well. I'll do better from now on. It should be turned on in the morn though, right? Kind of like an artificial sunrise! Thanks y'all.

littletank,
Get a timer for the tank belive me it saves a world of trouble. If it's not planted then the lights don't even need to be on all day.

And yeah, salt's not so good for snails .

Just a teaspoon even? Ohhh, poor Marmalade. The malachite green and formulin in the rid ich is bad for her too? I'll put her in this giant tupperware thing I have. I had to take her out during the nitrite spike because she'd get so swollen and couldn't walk. She hated it in the tupperware though. Oh well, we've gotta do what we've gotta do.
