There is a white ring that goes around his eye.

Does anyone know what this is?

hiya, is his white ring sort of floaty like bits of stuff stuck to it? is he lethargic?

I dont have any answers, i am just trying to find out about my catfish who has white around his eyes and on his fins that started off looking like white spot but has increased ...grown.... until he looks like he has shaggy white eyebrows...

excuse my ignorance, but what does lethargic mean?

He wolnt eat?

And the white ring looks like, well a white ring. But it is like around, but behind the eye.

Here is more info.

The white ring is like behind the eye.

If you look at the eye straight on (like the fish's body is longwise) it looks perfectly fine. But when the fish puts its mouth toward the glass, you can see it.

When i was looking at the fish, it kinda looks like the eye is protruding from the body at the bottom of the eye.

I cant really tell if it is a fungus because i dont know what it would look like. I remember one of my neons got this cotton like stuff on its mouth, and this doesnt really look like it, but again, im still not sure.

I tested the water today, and there was a little bit of nitrites in the tank (around 0.5 ppm) Nitrates were at 5 ppm.

It sounds like pop-eye to me. Also, lethargic means tired, droopy, listless.

Also, Ali, it sounds like you have fungus.

And, no he isnt legertic (SP?) he is acting normal.

hey guys, i think it is VERY minor popeye.

I saw a picture of a betta with popeye, and it had the white ring thing i was talking about.

What do i need to treat it? It doesnt seem any worse then when i first posted this (it acually seems better)

WHat can I use to treat the clown loach?

I believe melafix and pimafix are relatively safe for most fish, including loaches. I like to work them together (and this is legit according to AP). Neither will affect the biofilter.

Is it just this one fish? How many fish are in the tank?

Have you checked parameters lately? If there is even low levels of ammonia (0.25) it can cause eye cloud.

YOu may want to consider medicated food if it doesn't respond to the melafix. At least it won't foul your tank. I don't know how well the clown handles quarantine, but ideally that would be the best place to target only him for the medicated food. Otherwise, put the whole tank on it but it can get expensive and you may be medicating fish that don't need it. On the other hand, if the popeye is bacterial, it is contagious. The medicated food goes through the bloodstream to deal with it.

Alternatives include eye flukes and there is not much that can be done about those, other than it just looks ugly.

You'd have the best bet picking it up at Petsmart. It is suppose to be more widely available the end of this month, but I don't know how well timed that is.
