Lights on today and my flag acara's mouth is apparently stuck in a kissing, big O-shape. Any ideas what could have caused this, and is there anything I can do about it? I'm worried that it won't be able to eat; I'm also concerned because tomorrow we're heading out of town for a long weekend.

no new fish, plants, ferts, food, etc
normal dinner-time feeding last night

Can you see anything stuck in there? snail shell? pebble? something like that?

Looks like its physically wedged.

I have never seen it in this particular fish, but it appears to be dislocated. Its chance for survival will have to yet be determined. I have had a few fish, and seen more, that have dislocated their jaws. Most compensate and do survive. But some however do perish. You can try to put it back in, the only problem is, once this happens, they usually will just dislocate again, the next time the fish eats or gets into conflict. To less stress the fish, I recomend you just let it go and see if it can eat OK. If not, you might try pushing it back in.

HTH....

Thanks so much for the quick replies.

It looks a little better now, still open a bit but nowhere near how it was in the pictures.

When it was still wide I could see pretty much clear into its mouth, so I don't think anything was stuck.

So how does a fish dislocate its jaw?

I have seen several A compressicepts have this happen to them, some while fighting, others while eating. I also had a Lionfish of about 8 years, dislocate his while eating. I tried painfully (got stung twice) several times to relocate it, but everytime, it just fell out of socket as soon as he tried to eat.

Their mouths are hinged, and sometimes while jetting these hinged mouths out, they dislocate at the socket that they normally slide in.

Solved the mystery during this morning's feeding. Seems little acara is trying to eat cichlid food that's a bit too large for him/her:
