I just introduced four green corys to my tank a week ago. Within a few days one of them started showing some dramatic bloating, and now two others. The first one just died tonight. I acclimated them very slowly. I just don't get it?? Anyone??

Wow Mike, that's sad.

Here are some more questions that might help us identify the problem:

- How long has the tank been set up?
- What stock did you already have in there when you added the cories?
- How big is the tank?
- What kind of aquascaping stuff is in there? (substrates, wood, rocks, plants - real or fake?)

Also from your subject it makes me wonder if you've had other fish die in there - if so, what fish, what did they die of, and have you cleaned the tank out since they died?

I hope we can help you sort out this mystery.

THe tank is almost 1 1/2 years old. Its artificial decorations, and its ten gallons. I did have some previos problems with fin rot and barbel loss, however, I think i may have identified the problem. I fed some mashed peas to the survivors after my post last night, and today thay look almost back to normal. I think they needed to poop.

Tank stocked with artificial decor should be showing some signs of nitrATes....Unless I'm not reading something right that is!
Have you had the water tested by someone else, even the lfs (of course be sure to get the numbers and not just "your waters fine".
Side note, I wouldn't suggest keeping green corys in a 10 gallon tank, IMO they get way too big to be comfortable in something that small.

Sounds to me like the Corys perhaps had a problem prior to arriving in their new home?? Don't know what else the problem could be, unless your PH is far far off from that of the LFS. STill, I can't imagine that would kill them. Especially if you acclimated them w/drip method. Keep us posted.

Well done with the peas, mike hopefully that will solve the problem.

Is this the 10 gallon in your profile with:
3 albino cory
1 speckled cory
1 bronze/green cory
2 ottos

Did the tank still have the others in there when you added the latest batch? I'm also puzzled by the 0 nitrate reading...

Hmmm well I'm not going to harp on the space issue... but that's still an issue I hope you'll address soon.

What type of test are you using? Strips or liquid? Also how old is the kit itself, sometimes the test can go bad giving false readings with age.

The symptoms you described of fin rot and barbel loss can both be caused by high nitrates...
