Hi all got another ich question. I have a 29 gallon tank, housing 5 red rasboras and a freshwater dolphin. He seems to have spots on his head, looks like the starting of ich but I'm not sure. water is as follows temp=78, ammonia=0, nitrite=0, nitrate=5ppm. Here's the question... Does ich only grow on the fish, or will ti attach itself to the tank wall? the back wall of the tank has alot of these spots too. What could this be? We only feed him bloodworms, frozen. could the larvae have hatched? jw

Not likely. I've never heard of a case where the cysts (Ich) have been visible anywhere but on the fish.

Is it possible that these little white spots that you speak of could actually be Planaria? Planaria is a type of worm. Tiny but distinguishable if you look close. Normally when present you can see them moving up and down the glass walls in an aquarium. Although harmless to fish these worms will feed on eggs in a tank.

Ich spots have a specific appearance. They're about the size of salt grains, rounded, and an opaque white colour. They also remain stationary on the fish until they drop off to create swarms of free-swimming larvae. If your spots are moving about on the fish, especially if they're doing so in a manner visible to the naked eye, then it isn't Ich.

Oh, and this 'freshwater dolphin' - I take it it's a Mormyrid. If so, you have to be doubly careful with Ich meds, because Mormyrids are particularly sensitive to them.

I'm with Tammy and Cali, if it's ich it will only have the visible cyst stage while it's attached to the fish. Take a look at the [link=skeptical aquarist]http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/ich.shtml" style="COLOR: #FFFFFF[/link]'s description of the life-cycle of ich.
