please help my oscar is very ill. he is in a 100litre tank. he has been sitting on the bottom of the tank with his mouth open just today he has been lying on his side..
He wont eat and hasnt moved around alot. I've changed the water and changed his tank size from 70 litre to 100litre which I know is still to small for him as he is about 15cm long, But its the biggest I can get at the moment. He also has a slight discolouration (yellow) underneath and on his tail. The pet store gave me some sulphur tablets and and all in one remedy but both these did nothing. The temp is correct. Please can someone help me I dont think he has long.

Do you have a water test kit???
If not go to your pet store ask them to do it...

That would help a great deal!!

You need to have it tested for nitrites, nitrates and ammonia. Please get the readings from the lfs, not just that the water is okay.

He is right the numbers would be great, that would be the only way we could help.

I have thoughts already but I need numbers to confirm.

Until you get those numbers, what is your maintanence schedule???

Please list how many times you do these following things,

Water changes_
Gravel Vacs-
Filter changes (carbon and so on)

Also what type of filtration?

I belive 100 liters is...... 26 gallons I could be wrong..Is this right ??

Is there anything diffrent in your tank??

Also is there any tankmates???

Do you notice anything wrong with his gills or breathing??

If you could answer these it would be also a great help =p

Angel Eel

Do you have access to live food?? If so put a live fish in there see if he moves for it. Thanks

How's this fish going?

If the cocktail of treatments you added in the first instance has not killed it, then i'd suggest you stop with them right now. Also, the idea of adding a live fish to the tank for your Oscar to eat is somewhat misguided. The last thing you need in a tank that most likely has bad water parameters is more rubbish floating around in the water - especially if the oscar does try to eat it.

The first thing to do with any sick fish, just as Cory's post at this forum head suggests, is to get pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate readings at a minimum. You should be able to buy all of these test kits for under 30AUD all up, and they will last you around 6 months of regular use.

How long have you had this fish? If it's 15cm, and only in a 100L, it sounds like you bought it from a fish shop after someone else traded it. If you can't afford atleast a 300L tank, then i suggest you try and take the fish back. It's not going to be easy to keep it alive in that small tank.
