What tank size is your demsey in he could have swam into something and hurt his lip or may have been bitten in the lip but the other demsey. Melafix treats open woulds. YOu can find it at almost all fish/ petstores. It helps the would heal. If it gets any worse you may want to use a different medication.

good luck,

Has the dempsey been digging in the substrate? How about little fights with the other dempsey, like nipping, ramming, etc.

I agree that melafix is probably a good precautionary treatment. There is much bacteria in a tank.

However, keep in mind that some fish can have red lips that aren't really wounds, but just the result of courtship.

It's been so many years since I've had red lips from "courtship" I can't remember what they look like...

However, a "bleeding lip" is not much of a description and if your tank is well maintained no meds would be required because Dempseys may not respond favorably.

Perhaps you could whip up a neater description of the lip like is it raw red, split and bleeding??

Now these are an example of red lips (below). Sometimes they are bleach white and callused looking. I should have posted this and asked if they look like this. This rambunctious male is always ramming the other male, and the ladies I might add. I could never figure out how he thinks he's going to attract the ladies with such behavior. - all the while he's beating on them, the other, more timid male is in the java moss with two or three ladies at any given time

Yeah - red lips can be a broad description - too broad. Red like mine in the pic where it looks like it is just in the lips, or is it more external and bloody with damage? If you can post a pic yourself it would help.

That's pretty well stocked - how long have you had this number of fish in that tank? I've seen some mighty big dempsey's at the store.

Lets make sure you don't have something going on with the water chemistry. Albeit, others may be affected, sometimes one fish is more sensitive than another. Can you post values for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? What is current temp?

What is happening with your pH? Is it stable? Are you using some kind of additive that could cause it to yoyo? Is your tap water or well water that low?

Does it look like this by any chance? Look carefully down the throat. Don't lower temperatures as it infers. He doesn't need ich.

If so, get him out of there and into some type of hospital container. You can always use a rubber maid bin that is at least a good volume for the size fish. Use as much tank water as you can spare without depleting more than 30%. REfill the tank with identical temp water, then slowly add same temp water to the container in increments about 20 minutes apart (if the volume you must make up is large). ALways use a lid. A spare bubbler is all that is needed in a quick emergency and to be kept in a room where the temp won't drop to rapidly (wrapping the container with a blanket will slow temp drop if you don't have a heater).

If it looks like an injury, I would use something like Melafix or Pimafix to make sure it doesn't get infected.
